Start with the actual label

Product pages often emphasize a formula name or a list of featured ingredients. A careful consumer should also look for the complete physical label, including the Supplement Facts panel, serving size, servings per container, other ingredients, manufacturer or distributor details, and contact information. If the complete label is not easy to find before ordering, note that as an unanswered question rather than guessing.

Five things to check

1. Serving size and directions

Check how many capsules or tablets make up one serving and how often the label says to take them. A bottle that lists several ingredients does not tell you the amount you receive per day unless the serving information is clear.

2. Ingredient amounts and blends

The FDA explains that the Supplement Facts panel lists dietary ingredients and, except for ingredients included in a proprietary blend, generally gives the amount per serving. If a blend is used, the individual amounts may not be apparent. Do not infer that a longer ingredient list means a stronger or more effective product.

3. Other ingredients and allergens

Read the “Other Ingredients” line and any allergy or use warnings. If you have a food allergy or need to avoid a particular ingredient, contact the seller or a health professional when the label is unclear.

4. Contact and traceability

Look for the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor, along with an address or phone number for reporting serious adverse events. Keep the product name, lot number, and receipt if you decide to purchase.

5. What a quality seal does not prove

Some independent organizations test products for identity, strength, purity, or contaminants. NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements notes that a quality seal does not guarantee that a product is safe or effective for an individual. It is one data point, not a substitute for the label or medical advice.

Understand the limits of FDA oversight

In the United States, FDA does not approve dietary supplements or their labeling before they are marketed in the same way it approves medicines. Manufacturers and distributors are responsible for making sure their products and claims meet applicable requirements, and FDA can take action when it identifies violations. The fact that a product is available online is not proof that FDA has confirmed its benefits.

Apply the checklist to an online offer

Ask whether the complete label and serving directions are visible, whether claims are specifically about the finished product, and whether the total price and return terms are clear. A seller’s landing page is promotional material, not independent verification of its own claims.
